The Gifts of the Spirit
| Sermons Online |
January 17, 2010 / Epiphany 2, Year C
Text - 1 Corinthians 12:1-11
Time - 00:17:39
Those of you who were here last week may recall that our gospel reading was Luke’s account of the Baptism of Jesus. We began by hearing John’s denial that he himself was the Christ and his confession, “I baptise you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.” Then we heard how the Holy Spirit came down upon Jesus at his baptism and remained. We heard about God the Father’s pronouncement, "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased." Last week I focussed in on some of the more general implications of Epiphany, how God was revealing Jesus as the one and only saviour for all peoples. Today, though, I want to pick up on this theme begun in last week’s gospel and carried on in our reading this morning from 1 Corinthians, the theme of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.
